Nodoka Miyazaki is a mousy girl who is a middle school student at Mahora Academy, with her being part of class 2A/3A. A huge bookworm (to the point where a number of her classmates refer to her as Honya-chan, a reference to the Japanese term for "book store"), Nodoka is among the students in her class who works at the school library (and is a member of the Library Exploration Club).

While Nodoka herself usually gets nervous when it comes to people of the other gender, she fell in love with her teacher, Negi Springfield, after he rescued her from a dangerous fall off some stairs during his first day as a teacher. Eventually, Nodoka discovered that Negi is actually a young wizard, with her becoming the second girl to make a Pactio with him. As one of Negi's partners, Nodoka has the ability to literally read the minds of other people via a magical picture diary, making her a valuable member of his team.
