Laboon is an extremely large whale originally from West Blue.He is the first "character" the Straw Hat Pirates encounter after entering the Grand Line.

Laboon is a large black whale with many scars across his head where he has bashed himself against Reverse Mountain. After meeting the Straw Hats, Laboon gains a badly drawn copy of their Jolly Roger across his scars.

Laboon was many years ago a friend of the Rumbar Pirates. But since Laboon was still a young whale he couldnt come any further with them to the Grand Line since it was to dangerous.
And there for he waited patiently at the Grand Line's entrance under the care of Crocus.

Brook was discovered to have once been a member of the pirates that befriended Laboon 50 years ago. It is revealed that Brook's crew had been wiped out during their journey, effectively leaving Brook the sole survivor due to the ability of the Yomi Yomi no Mi. Because of the promise Brook and the rest of his crew made to Laboon to return to him, Brook feels obligated to meet up with Laboon in order to fulfill it.
