My Anime Pin Collection

My Anime Pin Collection
16 авг 2010 03:47:20

After checking out a blog entry here pertaining to some of the other anime merchandise that one of the regulars has, I thought it would be fun to show off another aspect of anime merchandise that I collect besides figures and plushies. In my case, I'm here to talk about my collection of anime pins.

For me, my anime pins collection dates back to my very first anime convention, Anime Express 2001, in which I received a Pikachu pin (which I sadly lost) when people were throwing out free prizes while the cosplay was being judged. However, my collection really began at Otakon 2001 when, after watching an AMV in the AMV Contest that prominently featured DiGi Charat, I went looking for DiGi Charat-related merchandise in the Dealers' Room, with me picking up a Dejiko pin while I was there. Katsucon 2002 was the convention where the collection really began to pick up, as I ended up picking of pins of Kaolla and Shinobu from Love Hina and Cherry from Saber Marionette J (ironically, the weekend after I got these pins, I ended up watching the Love Hina episode where Kaolla gave Shinobu her first kiss).

Basically, when it came showing off my pins, I originally had them attached to a bag that I brought with me whenever I attended a meeting of the anime club that I was a member of at the time. However, when Animazement 2002 came around the corner, I thought of something: what if I wore something at the conventions that I attend that shows off my pin collection? With that, the idea of me having an anime pin hat was born.

For the original pin hat, I used an old baseball cap that belonged to one of my older brothers, and put the pins around the front of the hat. Then, whenever I bought a new pin at an anime convention (or online), I'd place it next one of the older pins, while making sure that there was room for the pins to move around.

The idea of using the baseball hat to display my pins lasted until midway through Katsucon 2007. Two main factors resulted in me changing my pin hat right in the middle of the convention. The first involved the fact that I was running out of room on the front of the hat (and I wasn't planning to put pins all around the hat in case a fastener got loose). The second reason for this involved the fact that during the convention, one of my pins accidentally got broken while I was trying to put my camera bag around my shoulders (luckily, I was able to find another copy of the pin that broke in the Dealers Room, with me getting a discount after I explained the situation to the people running the table). Hence, upon seeing that one dealer was selling hats similar to the one Kisuke wears in Bleach (haven't watched that show regularly since the middle of the Soul Society arc), I ended up buying one and immediately transferred all the pins that I had from the baseball cap to the Kisuke hat.

Currently, I'm still using the Kisuke hat to display my anime pins. After all, give the size of the hat, I still have plenty of room to put more pins on it. However, at the moment, I'm undecided as to whether or not I'm planning to retire that hat from being worn at the anime conventions that I attend. Part of it stems from the fact that although I did bring it with me to Otakon 2010 last month, I didn't really wear that hat when I was at the convention center. While part of it was due to the fact that I was already lugging around a bookbag with me as well, I also consider another reason for not wearing it being due to me not wanting too much items occupying space when I sit down at various places (with me already carrying around the convention bag, a book bag, a camera bag, and various items I bought at the Dealers' Room).

Now that I've gone through telling the history of the pin collection, I might as well show pictures of it right now.
