Katsucon 17 Part 1: Dealers' Room Loot

Katsucon 17 Part 1: Dealers' Room Loot
22 фев 2011 04:58:33

This past weekend was President's Day weekend, and for an anime fan who lives in the Washington DC area, that also means Katsucon, the start of the anime convention season in the DC/Maryland/Virginia area. As usual, I made a few trips to the Dealers' Room and picked up numerous items.

I'm doing something a little different this time when it comes to telling what I have purchased. This time around, I'm listing my purchases in order of when they happened, with me providing some additional comments along the way.

-The first stop at the Dealers' Room: the Funimation booth, as I planned to pick up FLCL on Blu-Ray during the con and hoped Funi had Evangelion 2.22 out early. No Evangelion this con, but I was still able to pick up FLCL.

-Near the end of my first look-round at the Dealers' Room, I saw one dealer selling an artbook on Project Diva, the PSP game based on the Vocaloid franchise. Having enjoyed a number of the costumes that appear in the game, I purchased a copy of the book.

-Just before meeting up with my mother to have some lunch, I actually noticed some K-On pin sets that were usually given to stores as Ichiban Kuji prizes (basically, a person pays 800 and receives a ticket in hopes of winning one of many prizes that are offered in the raffle). As I've posted earlier, I'm a collector of anime-related pins. As a result, I picked up all three pin sets upon seeing them (although I've yet to put the pins on my Kisuke hat).

-During my second go-round of the Dealers' Room, I noticed one thing that I missed during my first go-round: a plushie that depicts Kagami from Lucky Star as a pig. Having not seen anything else that was a "must buy" at the moment (and given how it was being sold at a decent price), I picked her up, adding some company to seal pup Nodoka Miyazaki.

-One thing that disappointed me when it comes to Katsucon's Dealers' Room (besides the dumb "no bag" rule during Friday) was the selection of figures. Basically, most of the figures being sold were of the cheaper/smaller variety, and I wasn't able to find the type of figures that I was looking for (i.e. Busou Shinki, more Final Dragon Chronicle figures). That doesn’t mean I didn’t see any figures that interest me, as some dealers were selling a few figures that were high-priced due to them being exclusives (i.e the Queen’s Gate versions of Dizzy and Cham-Cham), not to mention another dealer had some Shining Wind swimsuit figures (as I had my doubts about winning the Valentine’s Day picture contest). Eventually, I did buy one of those “exclusive” figures after seeing it being on sale in the Dealers’ Room. As for which one, I’ll let the picture below be the one to tell it (as I was keeping this secret on My Anime Shelf until I posted this blog entry).

-Along with the Snow Miku Nendoroid, that dealer was also the Limited Edition Black Rock Shooter Blu-Ray set (with art books and figurines). As someone who wants to collect anime Blu-Ray discs (especially given how Japanese BD’s work on American systems), I picked it up after going through the Dealers’ Room a few more times to decide what else to buy (as I also considered some more figures and Maria Holic on DVD).

-While Video Games New York was at Katsucon this year, the dealer didn’t have the two PSP titles that would interest me (K-On! and Busou Shinki). Also disappointing was the lack of American versions of certain games (my rule is that I’d buy import games if I have a very good feeling that the game won’t be released in the United States) and the PS2 games that interest me, as they were new games, being a little too high for me (I’m rediscovering PS2 games after setting the system up in my bedroom, but prefer to buy games used to save money). However, they did have one thing I was looking for since Anime USA, the Japanese PSN cards (as I wanted to set up a Japanese PSN account and download Dreamy Theater). Hence, I bought one this weekend, and after setting up a Japanese PSN account, I used the points to buy Dreamy Theater (which worked well on my PS3 after I figured out that I needed to install something on my PSP as well).
